HELP PRESERVE METAMORA'S RURAL CHARM
Citizen action is the only solution to fighting Levy and Boy Scouts from industrializing a large chunk of our countryside and creating a heavy truck route in our village.
Help Us Fight
Citizen Action Is the Only Solution
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE PROPOSED 724 ACRE GRAVEL MINING OPERATION IN YOUR COMMUNITY THAT WOULD BE NEXT DOOR TO A SUPER FUND SITE ONCE KNOWN AS THE EIGHTH WORST TOXIC DUMP IN THE USA?
The Village and Township of Metamora, along with the Metamora Land Preservation Alliance (MLPA) understand that this threat is very real and we know first hand it is a costly fight. The good news is that we have been successful! The monies we have raised and spent so far have indeed made a difference. There is no mega super- industrial mine on the Boy Scout property.
The Levy Company and the Boy Scouts are back again with a plan to industrialize a large chunk of the Metamora countryside and turn the Village into a heavy truck route. This project has been stopped twice before and the Metamora Land Preservation Alliance believes it must be stopped again.
The proposed Boy Scouts/Levy Company mine will permanently alter the Metamora Hills with more than a generation of intensive mining! They have sought conditional rezoning, a Special Land Use permit, and a soil removal permit; proposing, in short:
- 496 acres on a 724 acre site
- 30 year project lifetime (approximate)
- 100 trucks in and 100 trucks out a day on Dryden Rd, 5 days a week and Saturday
- 406 acres of woodland removed
- All within 1500 to 2000 feet of a Superfund site still undergoing remediation.
Incredibly, the Levy Company claims that this massive mine will not have “very serious consequences” for our beautiful and unique community! There is no doubt that it will. This is important because that is the legal standard by which this case will be decided. So, we as a community, must prove the obvious: The proposed mining operation will have very serious consequences for our town and our way of life!

The mission of the Metamora Land Preservation Alliance is
To support thoughtful land stewardship practices in the Metamora community to sustain its unique characteristics.
Please watch the calendar for a schedule of relevant Township and MLPA meetings. Please send us your email to: firstname.lastname@example.org and we will send alerts of key events and opportunities for citizen action.
To fight this mine, we have retained Chris Bzdok of Olson, Bzdok & Howard. Chris has been named a best lawyer in America and a Michigan Super Lawyer both in environmental law; has served as Mayor of Traverse City; and an Adjunct Professor of Law at Michigan State University College of Law. Chris has the needed experience with sand and gravel to help us navigate the long path to success.
MLPA will hire experts to help win this fight. We need experts in geology, groundwater pollution, traffic safety, and property values to make clear at the public hearing that “very serious consequences” (the applicable legal standard) would result from this mine. It might seem obvious that the Town would be irreparably harmed by this proposed mining operation but that is exactly what Levy’s experts claim won’t happen. We must counter them with the truth and that is what our experts will do. Remember, we are solely funded by citizen donations!
